Nowhere is negative shape more important than in watercolor painting. There is no such thing as white watercolor paint. Therefore watercolor artists have to be very creative in how they arrange and paint a piece. Watercolor paint is also translucent so watercolor artists cannot add endless layers of paint to cover mistakes, or add light colors over darker colors. Darker colors are painted around lighter colors leaving a negative shape instead of painting the lighter color shape as you would in other mediums. Notice how the white parts of the paintings below are all the paper showing through. The lighter parts, like the holes in the man's hat below and the light on his face were not painted, they were painted around. Crazy huh?
Paint your own watercolor negative space (you can watch my video on instagram). You can choose a subject or you can paint white daisies like we did (though not even close to as well as the one example from above). Elinor and her five year old friend had a hard time not painting an outline first. That may be a developmental ability that comes later, or with lots of practice. However, if you are older than 8, you should be able to paint without drawing an outline first.
